Braces vs aligners have their own advantages and disadvantages. They vary based on the necessity of the patient.
Braces advantage:
Braces can be used for simple to complex teeth corrections.
Braces are not removable. Patient will not lose or forget to wear them.
Disadvantages:
Cleaning teeth with braces will be more challenging. Patients have to be very keen and particular with cleaning, if not, it can lead to other oral problems.
There will be restriction on diet with braces. Patients may have to refrain from eating hard and sticky foods.
Braces can rub on cheeks and lips. This can cause discomfort.
Braces are noticeable.
Aligners: advantages:
Aligners are less noticeable.
Aligners must be removed while eating, so cleaning teeth will be same with regular brushing and flossing. Also, they may not be restriction on diet.
Aligners have smooth texture, so less irritation to lips and cheeks.
Disadvantage:
Aligners should be worn 20-22 hours in a day to achieve desired result from treatment. Patients compliance will determine the results.
Aligners are not recommended for complex teeth conditions.
It may be hard for some patients to remove aligners in front of other people. May have to find an excuse or must visit the bathroom.
Replacing lost aligners will add to the cost.
Lastly aligners can cost more than braces.
Depending on the case and severity of dental condition complete treatment with braces/ aligners can take from 6 months to two years.
Total cost will depend on overall treatment needs, types of braces and your location.
Braces can cost anywhere from $1000 to $8000.
Staring cost for aligners are about $1000 to $3000.
In addition to upfront cost, after treatment retainers can cost $150 to $ 1000.
The first few days after initial appointment , mouth will likely be sensitive. Hence soft foods are best in the beginning. Some ideal foods to eat:
Scrambled eggs
Soups
Pasta
Soft vegetables
Mashed potatoes
Soft cheeses
Bananas
Yogurt
Some foods may cause sensitivity in the first few days. Foods to avoid when experiencing sensitivity include:
Ice cream
Spicy foods
Citrus foods
Chewy bread rolls
Hard candy and sticky candy
Popcorn
Nuts
Ice
Bagels
Pizza crust
Hard pretzels
Crunchy vegetables
Aligners must be removed before drinking anything but water.
Hot beverages can damage the aligner material causing them to be ineffective.
Dark colored beverages can stain and discolor the aligners.
Sugar containing beverages can damage the aligners and cause bacterial growth on teeth.
Always remove aligners before eating and be sure to put them back in after brushing and flossing.
Metal braces:
These are the traditional braces and are most commonly used to correct dental problems. They are least expensive.
Ceramic braces:
They are less noticeable than metal braces. Ceramic braces are made of polycrystalline alumina. They tend to stain more easily. They cost more than metal braces. Ceramic braces are more than twice likely to break off or fracture than metal braces. The bracket material is not as strong as metal braces. They may cause damage to top teeth when worn on bottom teeth especially for patients with excessive overbite.
Lingual braces:
Lingual braces are difficult to place than metal braces because they are placed behind the teeth, facing the tongue. The brackets are placed at the same time using customized , pre made bracket design instead of fixing one at a time as with traditional braces. Lingual braces are more expensive than metal braces due to their customized design, complex application to teeth and longer treatment period. They are hard to clean.
Self-ligating braces :
Self-ligating braces use a specialized bracket that clip to the wire. This means colored rubber bands are not used.
Complex cases may cost more than traditional braces. The locking mechanism may break slowing down the treatment.
Common types of pain / discomfort:
Irritated cheeks, lips, and gums
Swollen gums.
Pressure on teeth
Headache
Jaw tension
Sensitivity to heat /cold
Difficulty chewing food.
Jaw tension
All the above are body’s normal response to the new appliance. The discomfort/ pain fades after the body adjusts to the braces. You can use over the counter pain medication for soothing.
Braces, a popular orthodontic treatment, offer a solution to various teeth alignment issues. This treatment involves attaching brackets to the teeth and connecting them with a wire to gently apply pressure, gradually shifting the teeth into their desired positions. With their versatility and effectiveness, braces cater to individuals of all ages, from children to adults.
Addressing crooked or misaligned teeth is a common motive behind opting for braces. Not only do misaligned teeth impact the aesthetics of your smile, but they also create challenges in maintaining proper oral hygiene. Difficulties in cleaning crooked teeth increase the risk of cavities and gum disease. By straightening your teeth, braces enhance both your dental health and the ease of maintaining a radiant smile.
Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment: Enhancing Dental Health and Self-Esteem
Orthodontic treatment serves the purpose of achieving a proper bite, where aligned teeth comfortably interact with their counterparts in the opposite jaw. This alignment facilitates essential functions such as biting, chewing, and speaking. By improving dental health and enhancing self-esteem, orthodontic treatment plays a vital role in overall oral well-being.
Including orthodontics as part of a comprehensive dental health plan ensures long-lasting teeth. With proper care, including necessary orthodontic treatment, teeth can remain healthy and functional throughout a lifetime.
Early evaluation is crucial for children and teenagers, while their growth is still ongoing. By receiving early treatment, they can benefit from results that may be more challenging to achieve once facial and jaw development has completed.
Maintaining a healthy bite is equally important for adults, regardless of age. Even at 65, adults can experience the advantages of orthodontic treatment, leading to improved dental, physical, and emotional well-being. Age is not a barrier to orthodontic treatment, as healthy teeth can be shifted at any stage of life, making it a valuable investment in oral health.
